I can't say enough good things about the Good K9 Academy's board and train program. Our pup went with Dylan for the two week board and train, and he was amazing. When she got back, it was like having a totally different puppy. Before, she would lunge and bark at kids and runners, pull at the harness, lag behind forever, and was generally not that pleasant to walk. Now, we can go off leash in the park and on trails and she stays close by (she's just shy of 9 months), she responds to commands like come and place and sit, she ignores runners and kids, and she's just so much more behaved. It's like she matured 6 mos to a year since she went to boarding, and is a calmer, happier dog. Also, Dylan had such a lovely bond with her that we felt great about leaving her with him for two weeks, and he sent us pics and videos as well, which helped when we missed her. If you're looking for a positive reinforcement-based board and train for your pup, I *highly* recommend Good K9 academy.

We couldn't be happier with our experience with Good K9 Academy. Caroline worked wonders with our high energy cavapoo puppy during his two-week board and train program. The regular video and picture updates provided us with peace of mind, and Caroline's communication throughout the process was great. We wholeheartedly trust the team at Good K9 Academy and cannot recommend them enough!!

This review is long overdue. But, in 2021, we decided to adopt a puppy from a shelter. We’ve had two other dogs in the past and we typically did not need a trainer. But, Lani came with a personality of dominance, which we could not manage. She had a mind of her own and wanted to be the boss. I decided to train her with Good K9 Academy. Andrew and Caroline are simply the best! I boarded her for the two weeks and she came back more behaved and obedient. When I had questions or issues they taught me tips and tricks along the process to help me keep Lani in check. Thank you Andrew and Caroline - “you guys are simply the best and definitely better than all the rest”

I'm so happy to have found Good K9!! I have a year and half old German Shepherd, Bud, who I've been training and taken to trainers since he was a puppy. Recently he was showing a lot of reactivity towards other dogs and people. After trying another trainer local to me and having no luck in solving the issue I called Good K9. Andrew was very knowledgeable and was super quick to get a eval in. While in the board and train he sent me frequent updates and videos on how my dog was doing and progressing which was so nice and reassuring. When I picked Bud up the videos rang true and his reactivity compared to before was like night and day. Bud could now walk throw barking dogs and groups of people without caring. Andrew even got him to reach my goal of an off leash heel! Most importantly I can truly see how much he and the company cares for the dogs in their care and I felt at ease that my dog would be safe with them. Andrew treated and trained my dog as if it were one of his pups and I'm so grateful. If you have any doubts on where to go - take. your. dog. here.

I highly recommend Good K9 Academy! Andrew is very knowledgeable and knew what training my puppy needed. Throughout the training, he would send me updates on how she was doing. She learned so much! I can walk her with ease and she is not reactive towards other dogs or people anymore. All other trainers are great with training. You can tell they love what they do.

We highly recommend Good K-9 Academy! Callie, our 9 month old mini-goldendoodle, is a very happy, sweet girl, but was struggling to walk on leash due to high reactivity to other dogs, people, bikes and cars. We could not take her for casual walks or to public places without feeling overly stressed. Additionally, we had done some previous training for basic obedience and recall commands of which she was not consistently responsive. We were at a crossroads so decided to do extensive research in hopes of finding a better training solution. Thankfully we found Good K-9 Academy. After speaking extensively with Andrew, the owner, we felt very confident that the two week board and train program would be a good fit for Callie. We were very nervous to part from her for two weeks, but Andrew was incredible at communicating with us every single day in addition to sending several pictures and videos throughout her training program. We were amazed at Callie's progress only after two days. She was out at public places and responding beautifully to her main trainer, intern, Kristyn. We were truly speechless on a daily basis by what we were observing and very pleased at how happy she appeared as she received her training. We have now had Callie home for a week and we are so pleased with her behavior. We are able to walk her off- leash without hesitation and she is responding to recall commands in all scenarios. We feel she is her happy self and now gets to experience the world with us so much more. We of course are committed to reinforcing her positive behavior on a consistent basis to ensure her continued success. Without a doubt we highly recommend Good K-9 Academy for excellent puppy training. Thank you so much Andrew and Kristyn!!

Tony is fantastic! Our reactive 3 year old miniature pinscher completed her 2 week board and train with him and it made a world of difference. She learned how to heel, down, sit, and come in distracting environments, which she would not do before training. Not only did Tony help our girl to become more confident, he equipped my husband and I to be better owners. Tony was communicative, thorough, and proactive in providing training updates via daily texts and video footage. We were so impressed with his work that we booked to have him work with our puppy in a month.Would recommend Good K9 to anyone looking for training for their pup. Come prepared to learn!

Apollo is a my first puppy dog ever and he/we struggled with basic obedience commands. He pulled on the leash, didn’t come, sit or place with any consistency. After just two weeks of Board & Train with Tony, Apollo is now showing off his new skills! He can now heal, sit, and place on command. Our walks are much more fun and we even went on a hike in the woods recently. Apollo also learned the Off command that helps me - help him stop eating and chewing random trash, socks and organic matter he sniffs along the way. I was initially nervous about the e collar but it really helps Apollo understand the commands and he is still the happy, silly puppy we love. Thanks to Good K9, Andrew and Tony!!

Highly recommended! Our Sheepadoodle puppy (9-months) Willow is a ball of energy. Super affectionate and social her energy needs to be focused so that we can all enjoy each other. We struggled with a puppy training course that was solely treat reward based as well as numerous harnesses and leash leaders to no avail. Walking with her was exhausting, stressful, and embarrassing. After 2-weeks of training and boarding with Tony we have a better behaved pup who aims to please, appears more at ease and happy, and who listens. She still has a lot of puppy energy and characteristics, but over time with the training we received and consistency from us she will continue to learn. She has been a great dog and now she is even better and we are enjoying each other more. The cost can be high but the results are worth the expense. Thanks Tony and Good K9 Academy!

Andrew was amazing with our six month old rescue pup -Dewey. Dewey was a stray puppy born on the streets in Puerto Rico and brought into the US by Lucky Dog rescue when he was 2 months old. He was super reactive to people, other dogs, and basically every noise etc. We started working with Andrew right after we adopted Dewey and worked with him directly for four 1-1 private lessons and then signed Dewey up for Andrew’s 2 week board and train. Dewey just graduated and it’s amazing what Andrew accomplished with Dewey. Dewey is confident, no longer reactive, sits, heels, knows place and can even heel off leash. It’s is AMAZING the transformation in Dewey after being with Andrew in his 2 week board and train. I highly recommend Andrew and his team of trainers at Good K9 Academy. They gave Dewey the confidence and tools to be a successful pup and taught us as well. Good K9 Academy truly cares about their training dogs and the families they are working with.

I am SO HAPPY with the results! My dog used to pull me on walks and ignore me when I called him, but after doing this training program, he's completely transformed! He's able to play with new pups now that he's learned how to socialize properly and has had his behavior corrected. The trainers were amazing - super knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely cared about our dog's well-being. David was great! He kept me updated on our dog's progress and even sent me videos of his training sessions, which made me feel at ease knowing he was in good hands. Since finishing the program, our dog has become much more responsive to commands and is so much easier to walk on a leash & off leash. It's such a relief that he no longer pulls me around and actually listens when I call him. I'm really glad we went through with the 2 week board and train program at Good k9 academy - Andrew and David were so helpful and answered all of our questions and concerns. My Coco is still a puppy so he gets super distracted with new things so, we continue to practice what we learned to ensure he doesn't forget and keeps listening to us. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this board and train program to anyone who needs help with their furry friend's behavior.

Our 11 month Wheaton Terrier recently completed his 2 week board & Train program and we are so pleased with his progress. Thank you David !!! You are an amazing trainer who’s supportive and structured approach works and helped our puppy to feel comfortable ( after being nervous ) to be away fromHome and gain all these new skills . Wheaten terriers are know to be stubborn and hard to train sometimes. Rylan seemed open and definitely had fun with his fellow classmates . Regular updates/ videos of his activities, training and even field trips 😊 eased any worries while he was away . I commend Andrew and the entire team for their professional and organized training program. Rylan is excited to be a graduate and part of the pack w Goodk9Academy .

Why Puppy Training Matters

The first few months of a puppy's life are the most critical period for learning and socialization. During this window, your puppy's brain is wired to absorb new experiences, form positive associations, and develop the behavioral patterns they will carry into adulthood. Good K9 Academy's puppy training program in Gaithersburg is designed to take full advantage of this developmental period, giving your puppy the foundation they need for a lifetime of good behavior.

Puppy training is not just about teaching sit and stay. It is about building a relationship based on clear communication, trust, and consistency. Our experienced trainers work with puppies as young as twelve weeks, covering everything from basic obedience commands and leash manners to bite inhibition, socialization with other dogs and people, and exposure to new environments. These early experiences shape your puppy's confidence and temperament in ways that are much harder to influence once they reach adulthood.

Without proper puppy training, the cute behaviors that seem harmless at ten pounds become serious problems at fifty or seventy pounds. Nipping becomes biting. Jumping becomes knocking people over. Pulling on leash becomes an unmanageable dog that you dread walking. The families in Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, and across Montgomery County who invest in professional puppy training early almost always avoid the expensive behavior modification work that comes later.

Foundation Commands and Essential Skills

Our puppy training program covers every skill your puppy needs to grow into a well-behaved adult dog. We start with foundation obedience commands: sit, down, stay, come, place, and leash walking. These are taught using age-appropriate methods that respect your puppy's attention span and developmental stage. We use positive reinforcement and reward-based techniques to make training fun and engaging for your puppy while building reliable responses that carry over to real-life situations.

Beyond basic commands, we focus heavily on the life skills that many puppy owners overlook. Bite inhibition teaches your puppy to control the pressure of their mouth, which is critical for preventing bite incidents later. Impulse control exercises teach your puppy to wait before eating, sit before going through doors, and settle calmly instead of demanding attention. Housebreaking and crate training are integrated into the program so your puppy learns where to go to the bathroom and how to relax in their crate without whining or anxiety.

Socialization is a core component of every puppy training session. We expose your puppy to different surfaces, sounds, people of various ages and appearances, other dogs, and novel environments. This careful, positive exposure during the critical socialization window of eight to sixteen weeks builds a confident, well-adjusted dog that can handle whatever life throws at them. Puppies that miss this window are significantly more likely to develop fearfulness, reactivity, and anxiety as adults.

Private Lessons, Board and Train, and Group Classes

Good K9 Academy offers multiple puppy training formats to fit your family's needs and schedule. Private in-home lessons allow our trainers to work with your puppy in the environment where they live, addressing house-specific issues like potty training, crate training, and door manners. This one-on-one format is ideal for families in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Silver Spring, and across the DC area who want personalized attention and the convenience of training at home.

For families who want the fastest and most thorough results, our puppy board and train program provides an immersive training experience. Your puppy lives with their dedicated trainer and receives daily socialization, obedience training, crate training, and exposure to a structured routine. Because we only train a few dogs at a time, your puppy gets individualized attention throughout the entire program. Puppies that go through board and train come home with a solid foundation of obedience and exceptional social skills.

Group puppy classes are also available for families who want to combine professional instruction with the socialization benefits of a class environment. Your puppy learns alongside other puppies of similar age and skill level while you practice handling techniques under the guidance of our certified trainers. Many families find that combining private lessons or board and train with group classes provides the most comprehensive puppy training experience.

Build Good Habits Before Bad Ones Start

The single best investment you can make in your dog's future is professional puppy training. Dogs that receive proper training and socialization as puppies are dramatically less likely to develop behavioral problems as adults. Reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, destructive behavior, and excessive barking are all significantly reduced in dogs that had a structured foundation during puppyhood. Prevention is always easier, faster, and less expensive than correction.

Good K9 Academy has trained thousands of puppies in the Gaithersburg area over the past 10 years, and have seen firsthand the difference that early training makes. Puppies that go through our program grow into confident, well-behaved adult dogs that can go anywhere, from busy sidewalks and outdoor cafes to family gatherings and off-leash parks. That freedom and reliability is the real payoff of investing in puppy training early.

Good K9 Academy accepts puppies of all breeds, from small companion breeds to large and giant breeds like Goldendoodles, German Shepherds, Huskies, Labradors, and Pit Bulls. Our trainers understand the breed-specific needs and developmental timelines that influence training approach and expectations. With 100+ five-star Google reviews and a boutique, individualized approach, families across Montgomery County, Poolesville, Columbia, and Washington DC trust Good K9 Academy with their puppies.
