We are so happy to have found the Good K9 Academy! After completing the 2 week board & train program, our corgi is now turning heads with how eagerly she follows commands like "heel" and a sustained "place" ! The pack walks for alumni are a highlight! When we needed to board our corgi, we knew our pup would be in the best hands. Caroline possesses a rare combination of expertise and kindness that makes dogs feel safe and eager to learn. She also made long-distance flights with our corgi possible by teaching us to train her to feel safe in her travel carrier bag, ensuring a positive travel experience. I highly recommend the Good K9 Academy!

Caroline and Andrew did an amazing job with our energetic 5 year old mixed breed dog who was in desperate need of training. They formulated a clear plan for his board and train and made us feel comfortable throughout his whole stay with regular updates on his progress and wellbeing. When we picked him up they gave us the skills and training we needed to continue his obedience at home. Would highly recommend!ServicesDog boarding with training

After hearing about Good K9 Academy from our friend, we decided to board our dog Sully with Caroline at Good K9 Academy. Sully was extremely reactive before training, and would pull the leash to chase any squirrel, or lunge to say hi to any human or dog that passed us. After the board/train and lots of practice, Sully walks like a service dog and we feel comfortable with him off leash! We cannot say enough good things about Good K9 Academy. When we boarded with Caroline, we were out of the country, and she sent us pictures and videos each day to make us feel at ease. She is so kind, responsive, easy to work with, and great with all dogs. Thank you again Caroline!ServicesDog boarding with training

I am very pleased with Andrew and the time he invested with my dog, Uzi. Andrew is an exceptionally dedicated trainer and did an excellent job teaching my dog to listen. He also paid close attention to Uzi's preferences, recognizing his toy-driven nature, and recommended an e-collar that worked wonderfully during our walks. Thank you so much; I am very impressed.ServicesDog training

I signed my Australian Shepherd dog named Lupo up for the drop off week session with Good K9 Academy. I was highly impressed with how well Andrew the trainer did with my dog. My dog had several bad habits, such as jumping up on people and counter surfing, which he no longer does. He also learned several commands, the most important of which is heel and stay in one position. I would recommend Good K9 Academy to anyone who’s looking for a good dog training facility.

We sent our Golden Retriever, Oscar, to the two-week board and train with David to work on leash pulling and reactivity to loud sounds outside and he did an amazing job. Oscar is now a pro heeler, listens when we say commands and while he is always a bit fearful, David gave us ways to help Oscar cope with the these fears. I could not recommend Good K8 Academy enough for any type of training your dog might need!! They are pros and know how to help the most stubborn of dogs.

Our two dogs Remi and Wini went through the 2 week boot camp with Caroline and David. We were not sure our dogs were even trainable but Caroline and David did it! They are very knowledgeable and experienced with training. They kept us updated each day along with pictures and videos of the progress. We are now able to walk our dogs and enjoy it! 🐾🐾 We would highly recommend this training!!

Dylan was an amazing trainer and educator with our dog Boo! We’ve gone from having outbursts at every Labradoodle to being able to walk past three dogs at the same time with little excitement at all, if any. trust the process.

Sent my dog to Dylan at Good K9 to address his car anxiety and I am beyond grateful for all the work that he put in! I was honestly ready to give up after working with multiple trainers over the past 3 years. But after just two weeks with Dylan, my dog now goes into the car crate with no hesitation and tolerates it so much more. Dylan also took my dog on many outings and worked on so much more than I even asked for. Highly recommend Dylan and Good K9!

This review is long overdue. But, in 2021, we decided to adopt a puppy from a shelter. We’ve had two other dogs in the past and we typically did not need a trainer. But, Lani came with a personality of dominance, which we could not manage. She had a mind of her own and wanted to be the boss. I decided to train her with Good K9 Academy. Andrew and Caroline are simply the best! I boarded her for the two weeks and she came back more behaved and obedient. When I had questions or issues they taught me tips and tricks along the process to help me keep Lani in check. Thank you Andrew and Caroline - “you guys are simply the best and definitely better than all the rest”

Balanced Training That Actually Works

At Good K9 Academy, we believe in using every tool available to give your dog the best chance at a happy, well-adjusted life. Our balanced training approach combines positive reinforcement with structured accountability, including e-collar training when appropriate. This is not about punishment. It is about clear communication. When your dog understands exactly what you expect, they can make better choices with confidence.

Good K9 Academy has spent over 10 years refining this methodology across thousands of dogs in the Gaithersburg area. From Goldendoodles and Labrador Retrievers to German Shepherds, Huskies, and Pit Bulls, we have worked with every breed and every temperament. The behavioral issues we see most often are leash pulling, dog aggression, reactivity, separation anxiety, excessive barking, and command non-compliance. These are not character flaws. They are communication gaps that proper training can resolve.

Unlike trainers who rely on a single method for every dog, we adjust our approach based on your dog's individual drives, sensitivities, and learning style. A fearful rescue needs a different strategy than a high-drive working breed. That flexibility is what allows us to deliver real results, not just temporary compliance, but lasting behavioral change that holds up in real-world situations. Every dog that goes through our program leaves with reliable recall, leash manners, place command proficiency, and the social skills to be a well-behaved member of your family.

Balanced dog training methods at Good K9 Academy

Training That Holds Up Outside the Classroom

Most dog training fails because it only works in controlled environments. Your dog sits perfectly in the living room but loses their mind at the park. That is the gap we close. At Good K9 Academy, every training program is built around real-world proofing. We train your dog in environments filled with the exact distractions they will face in daily life: other dogs, people, traffic, squirrels, bikes, and loud noises. By the time we hand the leash back to you, your dog has already proven they can perform under pressure.

Our board and train program is the most popular option for Gaithersburg families who want the fastest transformation. Your dog stays at our boutique facility for two to four weeks of intensive, daily training. Because we only train a few dogs at a time, every dog gets direct, one-on-one attention from our trainers. This is not a kennel where your dog waits in a crate all day. It is an immersive experience where learning happens throughout the entire day, from structured sessions to supervised play and socialization.

At the end of the program, we bring you in for a thorough two-hour turnover session. We walk you through every command, every tool, and every technique so you feel completely confident maintaining the results at home. And our support does not end there. All board and train graduates are invited to free alumni pack walks, where your dog can continue practicing their skills in a group setting with other trained dogs. That ongoing support is one reason families in Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, and across Montgomery County choose us over larger, less personalized training programs.

Common Questions About Dog Training

How long does dog training take?

It depends on the program and your dog's specific needs. Our board and train programs typically run two to four weeks. In-home training programs vary, but most families see significant improvement within four to six sessions. Puppies often need a few months of consistent reinforcement. During your free consultation, we will give you a realistic timeline based on your dog's behavior and your goals.

What training methods do you use?

Good K9 Academy uses a balanced training approach that combines positive reinforcement with structured tools like e-collars when appropriate. We are not purely reward-based and we are not purely correction-based. We use whatever combination gives your dog the clearest communication and the most reliable results. Every dog is different, and our certified trainers adjust the method to match the dog's temperament, drive level, and learning style.

What age should I start training my dog?

The best time to start is as early as possible. We accept puppies as young as twelve weeks for foundation puppy training. That said, it is never too late. We regularly work with adult dogs and senior dogs who have developed behavioral issues over time. Whether your dog is a puppy or eight years old, we can build a program that works for them.

What is the difference between board and train and private lessons?

With board and train, your dog goes home with one of our trainers and lives with them for the duration of the program. Your dog receives intensive daily training from that dedicated trainer in a real-world home environment. This is the fastest option for building reliable obedience and addressing serious behavior problems. Board and train graduates also get a two-hour turnover session and free alumni pack walks for life. Private lessons (in-home training) happen at your house, where we work with both you and your dog together. Private lessons are a great fit for families who want to be involved in the training process from day one, or for issues that are specific to the home environment.
