After hearing about Good K9 Academy from our friend, we decided to board our dog Sully with Caroline at Good K9 Academy. Sully was extremely reactive before training, and would pull the leash to chase any squirrel, or lunge to say hi to any human or dog that passed us. After the board/train and lots of practice, Sully walks like a service dog and we feel comfortable with him off leash! We cannot say enough good things about Good K9 Academy. When we boarded with Caroline, we were out of the country, and she sent us pictures and videos each day to make us feel at ease. She is so kind, responsive, easy to work with, and great with all dogs. Thank you again Caroline!ServicesDog boarding with training

We sent our Golden Retriever, Oscar, to the two-week board and train with David to work on leash pulling and reactivity to loud sounds outside and he did an amazing job. Oscar is now a pro heeler, listens when we say commands and while he is always a bit fearful, David gave us ways to help Oscar cope with the these fears. I could not recommend Good K8 Academy enough for any type of training your dog might need!! They are pros and know how to help the most stubborn of dogs.

David has been amazing to work with! We brought our 7-year-old husky mix, Kali, to Good K9 for help with anxiety and reactivity. She spent about eight months in and out of shelters before I adopted her in 2019. After some early success with training, COVID hit us hard — she became anxious, territorial, and leash reactive. Our recent move to Maryland only added to that!Kali’s anxiety made walks tough. She’s also stubborn, stoic, and generally unmotivated😂. David took the time to understand her, and the progress she made in such a short amount of time was impressive. She’s not perfect (and we’re still learning!), but the difference is night and day.I also love that Good K9 doesn’t stop after training. They offer follow-ups as needed and weekly pack walks for continued practice. Would definitely recommend!ServicesDog boarding, Dog training

We had a very reactive and hard to train rescue dog but David and team were great at adapting their style to her. They provided her with customized training during the bootcamp, and helped train us to be better owners as well. The team continued to provide us with support and advice through our journey, including additional training sessions, boarding, and daycare. They are great people all around and have created a supportive community for dogs and owners alike. We love good K9 and would highly recommend!!ServicesDog boarding with training, Dog boarding, Dog training

We brought our two 1 year and 4 month old cavapoos to Good K9 Academy for their two week intensive training. Before going they were incredibly reactive and difficult to control - even on leash. Every walk was a struggle. They have been back with us for a month now and have been an absolute joy. We are walking with them off leash. And although they are trained on an e-collar we are barely pressing any buttons. Both dogs are responding really well to voice commands - even when we see other dogs. Before they were impossible to control - now they’re great listeners and are super easy all around.Caroline and David took the time to meet with us in person and described the program. David and Dylan did all the training and have both remained available to answer questions - and also visit with us as needed post program. All in all - it has been a great experience and transformative for us as dog owners. Thank you!

Good K-9 Academy has been terrific in turning around our reactive dog that was difficult to manage and we had trouble walking in our own neighborhood. David at Good K-9 Academy went above and beyond by ensuring that our dog followed commands completely before returning him to us, and kept us updated on his progress. When he brought our dog back, he met with us for a couple of hours to go over what we need to know, and even came by to help us other times to ensure we were confident in using commands and kept our dogs attention. Good K-9 also has weekly pack walks that have helped our dog be with other dogs and helped us to improve our techniques. We are extremely satisfied with the difference in our dog's behavior and in our ability to communicate with him. His reactivity is under control and our dog walks are greatly improved.

My experience with Good K9 Academy was exceptional. I did both a phone and in-person consultation with them and both times they really spent the time to understand what I needed their help with. Because they market towards common "issues" I want to let others know they are equally as good for "trained" dogs.I am someone who spends a lot of time and money on my dog's training. I was looking for something VERY specific that other trainers couldn't really help me address because they found it difficult to reproduce the issues I was experiencing. My dog developed reactivity to large and loud trucks, school buses, delivery vans, and the mail man. I live in an area where there is high traffic which meant my dog's reactivity kept getting worse. I needed a trainer to work my dog in our hometown and that's exactly what Dylan did.Dylan helped me become a better trainer. Before Dylan, all the trainers kept telling me obedience was the key, but despite working on it, my dog's reactivity didn't improve. Dylan quickly recognized my dog loves to work as much as he loves to play; he taught me how to use that to my advantage. My dog's training plan was all about focus. Dylan catered to what my dog and I needs.Their prices are a bit higher than other trainers in the area which is why they weren't my first stop. They actually explained to me why and it's because their trainers typically work 1 dog at a time which is awesome and not very common. I have no regrets working with them and will likely do so in the future. I hope they consider marketing and additional training services towards alumni soon!

We used David to help out with our 1.5 year old golden retriever. We had issues on walks with him jumping on us and reactivity to oncoming dogs. Not only have we seen major improvements, our dog was able to learn new skills we would have never thought he was capable of. We would highly recommend Good K9 if you need any help with your dog. The investment has saved a lot of frustration and made our walks much more enjoyable.

I'm so happy to have found Good K9!! I have a year and half old German Shepherd, Bud, who I've been training and taken to trainers since he was a puppy. Recently he was showing a lot of reactivity towards other dogs and people. After trying another trainer local to me and having no luck in solving the issue I called Good K9. Andrew was very knowledgeable and was super quick to get a eval in. While in the board and train he sent me frequent updates and videos on how my dog was doing and progressing which was so nice and reassuring. When I picked Bud up the videos rang true and his reactivity compared to before was like night and day. Bud could now walk throw barking dogs and groups of people without caring. Andrew even got him to reach my goal of an off leash heel! Most importantly I can truly see how much he and the company cares for the dogs in their care and I felt at ease that my dog would be safe with them. Andrew treated and trained my dog as if it were one of his pups and I'm so grateful. If you have any doubts on where to go - take. your. dog. here.

Charlie (3yo Golden) and Cleo (1yo Golden) just graduated from the two week board and train program. They did an incredible job! I never would have thought it possible to have them off leash and not reactive prior to this. I am super excited to use this training in our everyday lives and be able to take them more places without having anxiety about their behavior. The trainers truly care about the dogs and are great in providing you regular updates. Thank you Andrew, Kristyn, David and Dylan! If you are on the fence about signing up your dog, just do it! It is 1000% worth it.

I highly recommend Good K9 Academy! Andrew is very knowledgeable and knew what training my puppy needed. Throughout the training, he would send me updates on how she was doing. She learned so much! I can walk her with ease and she is not reactive towards other dogs or people anymore. All other trainers are great with training. You can tell they love what they do.

We highly recommend Good K-9 Academy! Callie, our 9 month old mini-goldendoodle, is a very happy, sweet girl, but was struggling to walk on leash due to high reactivity to other dogs, people, bikes and cars. We could not take her for casual walks or to public places without feeling overly stressed. Additionally, we had done some previous training for basic obedience and recall commands of which she was not consistently responsive. We were at a crossroads so decided to do extensive research in hopes of finding a better training solution. Thankfully we found Good K-9 Academy. After speaking extensively with Andrew, the owner, we felt very confident that the two week board and train program would be a good fit for Callie. We were very nervous to part from her for two weeks, but Andrew was incredible at communicating with us every single day in addition to sending several pictures and videos throughout her training program. We were amazed at Callie's progress only after two days. She was out at public places and responding beautifully to her main trainer, intern, Kristyn. We were truly speechless on a daily basis by what we were observing and very pleased at how happy she appeared as she received her training. We have now had Callie home for a week and we are so pleased with her behavior. We are able to walk her off- leash without hesitation and she is responding to recall commands in all scenarios. We feel she is her happy self and now gets to experience the world with us so much more. We of course are committed to reinforcing her positive behavior on a consistent basis to ensure her continued success. Without a doubt we highly recommend Good K-9 Academy for excellent puppy training. Thank you so much Andrew and Kristyn!!

What Causes Leash Reactivity

Leash reactivity is one of the most common and frustrating behavioral problems dog owners face. A reactive dog is one that overreacts to specific triggers, usually other dogs, people, bicycles, or unfamiliar objects, by lunging, barking, growling, or pulling violently on the leash. This behavior can turn every walk into a stressful ordeal, making owners dread leaving the house with their dog. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Reactivity is the number one reason families in Gaithersburg, Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, and across Montgomery County contact Good K9 Academy.

Reactivity is almost always rooted in one of two emotional states: fear or frustration. Fear-based reactive dogs are overwhelmed by triggers and react defensively because they feel threatened. Frustrated reactive dogs want to get to the trigger, usually another dog, and react out of excitement or over-arousal when the leash prevents them from doing so. Understanding which type of reactivity your dog has is critical because the training approach differs significantly. Our experienced trainers evaluate your dog's body language, triggers, and threshold to determine the underlying cause before starting any training.

Without proper intervention, reactivity almost always gets worse over time. Each outburst reinforces the behavior pattern and makes it more ingrained. Dogs that start with mild leash pulling toward other dogs can escalate to full-blown lunging, snarling, and redirecting aggression onto their owner. The sooner you address reactivity with professional training, the faster and more complete the recovery will be. Good K9 Academy has helped hundreds of reactive dogs in the Gaithersburg area become calm, controlled, and enjoyable to walk.

Balanced Training for Reactive Dogs

Good K9 Academy uses a balanced training approach to address reactivity that combines desensitization, counter-conditioning, and structured obedience with clear boundaries and accountability. We start by building a solid foundation of obedience commands, sit, down, stay, heel, and place, so your dog has the tools to respond to you instead of reacting to triggers. A dog that can hold a reliable place command or maintain a focused heel has a framework for coping with situations that previously caused explosive reactions.

Once the obedience foundation is in place, we introduce triggers at controlled distances and intensities. This systematic desensitization process teaches your dog that the presence of their triggers does not require a reaction. We pair trigger exposure with positive outcomes and clear communication so your dog learns to look to you for guidance instead of defaulting to their reactive pattern. For many dogs, e-collar training is an effective tool in this process because it provides consistent, immediate feedback that cuts through the emotional intensity of a reactive episode.

Our trainers work with reactive dogs in real-world environments, not just a training room. We take your dog to parks, sidewalks, pet stores, and other locations where they will encounter triggers naturally. This real-world proofing is essential because reactivity is context-dependent. A dog that stays calm inside your house but explodes on the sidewalk needs training that addresses the specific environments and situations where the reactivity occurs. Good K9 Academy's reactive dog program is built around this principle.

Board and Train vs. Private Sessions

For reactive dogs, Good K9 Academy offers both board and train and private in-home training options. Board and train is often the most effective choice for reactivity because the immersive format allows for daily trigger exposure, consistent training, and rapid progress. During the two-week program, your reactive dog lives at our boutique facility and receives daily desensitization sessions, obedience training, and controlled socialization. Many dogs that arrive unable to walk past another dog without lunging leave the program able to hold a calm heel in busy environments.

Private in-home training is another effective option, particularly for dogs whose reactivity is strongest in their home environment or on their regular walking routes. Our trainers come to you and work with your dog in the exact situations where reactivity occurs. This allows us to address triggers like neighbors walking their dogs, delivery people, or specific locations along your route. In-home sessions also involve coaching you on leash handling, timing, and management techniques so you can maintain progress between sessions.

Many families in Silver Spring, Germantown, Clarksburg, and across the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area combine both approaches. Their dog goes through board and train to build a foundation of obedience and initial desensitization, then follows up with private sessions to generalize the training to their specific neighborhood and daily routine. This combined approach delivers the most thorough and lasting results for reactive dogs.

What to Expect from Reactive Dog Training

The timeline for resolving reactivity depends on the severity of the behavior, the dog's individual temperament, and the owner's consistency in maintaining the training. Most dogs show significant improvement within the first two weeks of professional training. Dogs with mild to moderate reactivity often achieve calm, controlled walking within a single board and train program. Dogs with severe, long-standing reactivity may need additional time and follow-up sessions.

It is important to understand that reactive dog training is not about suppressing your dog's natural reactions. It is about giving your dog better coping mechanisms and a clearer communication system so they can make different choices in the presence of triggers. A properly trained reactive dog does not just tolerate triggers. They learn to genuinely relax around them because they trust their handler and understand what is expected. That shift from reactive to responsive is what makes the difference between a dog you manage and a dog you enjoy.

Good K9 Academy has a proven track record of transforming reactive dogs in Gaithersburg, Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Poolesville, Columbia, and Washington DC. With 100+ five-star Google reviews and over 10 years of experience working with dogs of all breeds and all levels of reactivity, we have the expertise to help your dog. Reactive Dog Training Questions

What is the difference between a reactive dog and an aggressive dog?

A reactive dog overreacts to specific triggers with barking, lunging, or pulling but does not necessarily intend to cause harm. An aggressive dog displays behaviors with the intent to threaten or injure. Reactivity can escalate to aggression if left untreated, which is why early intervention is important. Our trainers will assess your dog during the free consultation and determine the right approach.

How long does reactive dog training take?

Most dogs show significant improvement within two to four weeks of professional training. Dogs with mild reactivity may resolve faster, while dogs with severe, long-standing reactivity may need ongoing work. We set realistic expectations during your free consultation based on your dog's specific situation.

What methods do you use for reactive dog training?

We use a balanced approach that includes systematic desensitization, counter-conditioning, structured obedience, and tools like e-collars when appropriate. Our goal is to give your dog clear communication and better coping mechanisms so they can choose calm behavior around triggers.

Can reactivity be fully cured?

Many reactive dogs achieve dramatic improvement and can walk calmly past their former triggers. Some dogs will always need management and structure around specific triggers, but with proper training, their reactions become manageable and their quality of life improves significantly.

Is board and train recommended for reactive dogs?

Board and train is often the most effective option for reactive dogs because it provides daily training, controlled trigger exposure, and consistent structure. The immersive format accelerates progress significantly compared to weekly private sessions alone.
