David has been amazing to work with! We brought our 7-year-old husky mix, Kali, to Good K9 for help with anxiety and reactivity. She spent about eight months in and out of shelters before I adopted her in 2019. After some early success with training, COVID hit us hard — she became anxious, territorial, and leash reactive. Our recent move to Maryland only added to that!Kali’s anxiety made walks tough. She’s also stubborn, stoic, and generally unmotivated😂. David took the time to understand her, and the progress she made in such a short amount of time was impressive. She’s not perfect (and we’re still learning!), but the difference is night and day.I also love that Good K9 doesn’t stop after training. They offer follow-ups as needed and weekly pack walks for continued practice. Would definitely recommend!ServicesDog boarding, Dog training

Sent my dog to Dylan at Good K9 to address his car anxiety and I am beyond grateful for all the work that he put in! I was honestly ready to give up after working with multiple trainers over the past 3 years. But after just two weeks with Dylan, my dog now goes into the car crate with no hesitation and tolerates it so much more. Dylan also took my dog on many outings and worked on so much more than I even asked for. Highly recommend Dylan and Good K9!

Charlie (3yo Golden) and Cleo (1yo Golden) just graduated from the two week board and train program. They did an incredible job! I never would have thought it possible to have them off leash and not reactive prior to this. I am super excited to use this training in our everyday lives and be able to take them more places without having anxiety about their behavior. The trainers truly care about the dogs and are great in providing you regular updates. Thank you Andrew, Kristyn, David and Dylan! If you are on the fence about signing up your dog, just do it! It is 1000% worth it.

Okay, let's start with the dog. We adopted Gelato in November 2022 and were told he was "reactive" when he saw other dogs. Our previous pooch wasn't reactive, but he didn't get along with everyone so it wasn't a deal breaker when he heard "reactive". The most important I think to recognize is that Gelato was in a shelter for almost 4 months being surrounded by constant barking. According to the shelter Gelato lived with another dog previously before being surrendered due to the owners age. Anyway the first week we had Gelato at home he was definitely reactive but not aggressive. He was afraid of everything. As a result, when he saw another dog his hackles went up and he would stand on his hind to legs and basically scream at the other dog.My boyfriend began looking into basic training for us and after some research, thought it would be better to have proper training. I agreed and we began the search for an actual training program. The first one he actually stumbled upon was good k9 academy. At first when my boyfriend said "board and train" oh my gosh I don't think I ever said no so fast. All those horror stories of dogs being left in hot vans or getting sick or getting loose etc. I was against it at first but my boyfriend showed me the profile and the alumni and I began to see that this isn't just any old PetSmart board and train pet hotel kind of deal. It's people who really care about your pet and the proof is in the poochies. There were so many success stories of dogs who were similar to Gelato. So we scheduled our consultation and Andrew came out himself to meet us and Gelato. He was very honest and up front about everything which I really appreciated. At the consultation he brought another dog with whom he was working with and Gelato did his thing and freaked, so Andrew decided to put the e-collar on to test and see how he would react and to my surprise but also relief, Gelato stopped! After some more consultation type things (i.e. walking next to each of us, walking past the other dog) we realized that Gelato actually has a chance at learning how to be a dog again. Andrew had actually said that he wanted to work with Gelato himself! So my boyfriend and I took the night to discuss which trainings we'd prefer and we decided to take the leap and invest in Gelato's well-being.Fast forward some more and we are dropping Gelato off at Andrews for the (at least) two weeks board and train. We were also prepared to have Gelato there for longer due to his reactivity and not knowing how he would do. Upon that first drop off night Gelato was reactive and barking but by the next day, Andrew sent us pictures and videos of his progress and it was amazing what changed in just a matter of a couple of days. Andrew was very communicative with us and was always sharing videos and pictures and answering our many texts and phone calls about any questions or concerns we had.Gelato has been home for a bit now and Andrew was very helpful at the drop off and has continued to offer his help while gelato transitions back into his own home. He even offered to have Gelato come for a play date with his own dogs! Gelato has learned so much and we owe it all to good k9 academy! They taught him how to be a dog again and I am forever grateful for Andrew and his staff who take the time to work with dogs and people. Words can't describe how amazed I am with Gelato's training and confidence. He can run and play and have fun without being anxious! He learned some advanced commands and loves getting treats for being such a good boy. It's reassuring knowing that my dog is safe when we go for walks and my own vigilance and anxiety can be lowered because of the training both Gelato and I have now. We are both more confident! This team is the best of the best and they are genuine dog lovers. They are very knowledgeable and they truly care about the pets and their owners. This has been the best experience for us and Gelato. Thank you so much, Andrew and your crew!

Good K9 Academy did a great job addressing my dog's anxiety and improving his basic obedience. My dog, Jelly, was afraid of people and had a severe fear of going outdoors due to loud noises, to the point of refusing to go for walks. David addressed and worked with Jelly on getting over these anxieties and provided updates through texts every few days. They trained and walked him in places such as PetSmart and hardware stores to help him become accustomed to different environments. Good K9 Academy also provided advice on how to deal with Jelly's anxiety. Through Good K9 Academy’s 2-week board and train, Jelly was able to overcome his fear of different outdoor environments and learn basic obedience such as sit, down, stay, heel, recall, and heeling off leash. I would highly recommend them for dog obedience and training.PositiveResponsiveness, Reliability

My 2.5 year old dog Bella recently completed the one week day training classes with trainer David. We took Bella to get help with reactiveness with people and dogs as well as well as pulling while going on walks.I have been following Good K9 Academy on social media for some time now and have always been super impressed with the results that they have achieved with other dogs experiencing similar obedience issues. I have been completely positively blown away by the night and day change that we have seen in Bella. Since completing her training going on walks is no longer a nightmare because every time she would see a squirrel she would go crazy pulling . She is now heeling, staying in place and has mastered other basic obedience commands. Our trainer David was great to work with, he was extremely helpful, patient, & knowledgeable. He really saw the sweet girl my pup is and has been instrumental to getting us on track to a less anxious life with our dog. He brought us both out of our comfort zones and targeted areas that we found to be needing the most work with. David was great in getting us out more in public and conquering our fear. I would deffinetely recommend Good K9 Academy services to all. They deffinetely have a dogs best interest at heart and I am so amazed by the results and change in our bella.setting up a consultation and response time was great, scheduling our training was super easy and fast!

We had our almost year old Siberian Husky do the two week board and train with Good K9 Academy and we truly cannot express how amazed we were with the results. We’ve had experience with other dog training companies in the past, but they never matched the level of professionalism and success as Good K9 Academy has. It was the typical “huskies are untrainable” situation with a super sweet but anxious dog. Our trainer was David and he was nothing less than amazing. Very reliable, knowledgeable and confident. David always kept us updated on what he was doing with Olivia and all of her progress; with texts, pictures and videos. He trained her to become a confident dog, and shocked us with all she was able to learn in those two weeks. I never thought I’d be able to say that I trust my dog off leash. Good K9 Academy is not just a company who trains dogs; they’re a community of amazing trainers and amazing alumni who become your family; with pack walks and play dates, it’s safe to say that Good K9 Academy is truly the best. Thank you all for everything!PositiveResponsiveness, Reliability, Quality, Professionalism, Value

Caroline and Andrew trained our 9 month old puppy. They did such a great job with Racha. Life at home and on walks has been calm with a lot less anxiety for Racha and us! We can't be happy enough with the training and the love that she received while staying at Caroline's home for 2 weeks. Caroline sent us video and photo updates the entire time, asked us questions, and made us feel completely at ease. The sweetest moment was when Caroline surprised our kids with hot chocolate and treats when they were stuck in the cold car waiting for us to go through final training.PositiveResponsiveness, Quality, Value

Best decision my husband and I ever made for our dog, Kai. Before Good K9 he was pulling on walks (I would need to use both arms to control him), barking at people or other dogs, and unable to hold commands during distractions. Kai did the day train program with their trainer Skyler and after the first day we saw a major difference! He was no longer pulling. Skyler did a great job with training Kai and working on his car anxiety with him. Kai loved Skyler and the results we saw were amazing. 100% would do it again, very much worth it.PositiveQuality, Professionalism, Value

Why Your Dog Panics When You Leave

Separation anxiety is one of the most distressing behavioral issues for both dogs and their owners. Dogs with separation anxiety experience genuine panic when left alone, leading to destructive behavior like chewing furniture, scratching doors, and digging at carpets. They may bark or howl excessively, have indoor accidents despite being housebroken, refuse to eat, or attempt to escape through windows and doors. This is not your dog being spiteful or disobedient. It is a real anxiety disorder that requires professional intervention.

Separation anxiety can develop for many reasons. Dogs that were surrendered or rehomed often develop attachment anxiety because they have experienced abandonment. Puppies that were never taught to be alone gradually become over-dependent on their owner's presence. Major life changes like moving to a new home, a change in work schedule, or the loss of a family member can trigger separation anxiety in dogs that were previously fine being left alone. Some breeds are genetically predisposed to anxiety-related behaviors, though any dog of any breed can develop it.

If your dog in Gaithersburg, Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, or anywhere in Montgomery County shows signs of separation anxiety, getting professional help early is critical. Left untreated, separation anxiety almost always gets worse. The destructive behavior intensifies, the dog's distress escalates, and the owner's frustration and guilt build until the situation becomes unmanageable. Good K9 Academy has helped hundreds of families resolve separation anxiety through structured training that builds independence and confidence.

Building Independence Through Structured Training

Good K9 Academy's separation anxiety training program addresses the root cause of your dog's anxiety through systematic desensitization, independence building, and structured routine. We start by teaching your dog to be comfortable spending time away from you while you are still in the house. This means building duration on a place command in a different room, crate training with gradual increases in separation distance and time, and rewarding calm, independent behavior rather than clingy, attention-seeking behavior.

Once your dog can handle separation within the house, we begin graduated departure training. This is a systematic process where we practice leaving the house for very short intervals, just seconds at first, and gradually increase the duration as your dog demonstrates they can stay calm. We teach you how to read your dog's stress signals so you know exactly when they are approaching their threshold, and we never push past what your dog can handle. This patient, incremental approach is the only way to achieve lasting improvement with separation anxiety.

Crate training is often a critical component of separation anxiety treatment. A properly conditioned crate gives your dog a safe, enclosed space where they feel secure when you are away. It also prevents destructive behavior and keeps your dog safe during the training process. We teach your dog to love their crate through positive association, and we use it as a management tool while building their independence through the desensitization protocol. Not every dog with separation anxiety needs a crate, but most benefit from it significantly.

When Training Alone Is Not Enough

For dogs with severe separation anxiety, medication prescribed by a veterinarian can be a valuable complement to behavioral training. Medication does not cure separation anxiety on its own, but it can lower a dog's baseline anxiety level enough to make training effective. Some dogs are so overwhelmed by panic that they cannot learn new coping strategies without pharmacological support. In these cases, we work alongside your veterinarian to coordinate a combined approach that gives your dog the best chance of success.

Good K9 Academy does not prescribe medication, but we are experienced in working with dogs on anxiety medication and can help you communicate with your vet about your dog's specific needs and progress. Many of our clients in Germantown, Silver Spring, and across the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area have found that the combination of professional behavioral training plus veterinary-prescribed medication produces faster and more lasting results than either approach alone.

It is also important to rule out medical causes for behaviors that look like separation anxiety. Some dogs have indoor accidents when alone due to urinary tract infections, not anxiety. Some dogs bark excessively due to pain or hearing loss. During our consultation, we help you determine whether your dog's behavior is truly separation anxiety or if there may be a medical component that should be addressed first.

Maintaining Progress After Training

Separation anxiety training is not a quick fix. It requires patience, consistency, and a long-term commitment to maintaining the protocols that helped your dog improve. At Good K9 Academy, we give you a detailed maintenance plan that outlines exactly how to manage departures, how to continue building duration, and how to handle setbacks. We also provide ongoing support and follow-up to help you stay on track.

Environmental enrichment plays an important role in long-term separation anxiety management. Dogs that have mental stimulation during alone time, through puzzle feeders, frozen Kongs, scent work activities, and appropriate chew toys, cope better with separation than dogs left with nothing to do. We teach you how to create an enrichment routine that keeps your dog engaged and reduces anxiety during your absences.

Good K9 Academy also offers daycare services for families who need a safe option for their dog during long workdays while separation anxiety training is in progress. Rather than leaving your dog alone to panic while you are still working through the training process, daycare provides supervision, socialization, and structure that prevents regression. Many Gaithersburg, Clarksburg, Poolesville, Columbia, and Washington DC families use our daycare as a bridge solution while their dog builds the independence to handle being alone at home.

Separation Anxiety Training Questions

What are the signs of separation anxiety in dogs?

Common signs include destructive behavior when left alone (chewing, scratching, digging), excessive barking or howling, indoor accidents despite being housebroken, pacing, drooling, escape attempts, and refusal to eat when alone. These behaviors typically begin within minutes of the owner leaving.

Should I medicate my dog for separation anxiety?

Medication can be helpful for dogs with severe anxiety, but it should always be combined with behavioral training. Medication alone does not teach your dog coping skills. We work alongside your veterinarian to coordinate treatment when medication is appropriate.

How long does separation anxiety training take?

The timeline varies depending on the severity of the anxiety and your consistency with the training protocols. Most families see noticeable improvement within two to four weeks of structured training. Dogs with severe, long-standing anxiety may need several months of gradual desensitization to achieve full independence.

Can a board and train program help with separation anxiety?

Board and train can help build overall confidence, obedience, and crate comfort, which are all foundations for addressing separation anxiety. However, the graduated departure training specific to your home and routine will need to continue with in-home sessions after board and train.

Will my dog grow out of separation anxiety?

Unfortunately, separation anxiety rarely resolves on its own and typically worsens without intervention. Professional training is the most effective way to address it. The sooner you start, the faster your dog will improve.
